Not when one looks at the genesis of the group, which in the early days mainly propagates punk or derived musical styles. And although those musical indulgences do not weigh the group in the country with the same name, the rest of the world still looks at the band with a strange look. They already knew each other from the punk band The Starjets. At their first concert in February 1984, the band further consists of Gribben's wife Eileen (vocals), Gerard Murphy (guitar, percussion, vocals), Tony Ayre (bass) and Paul Crowder (drums). If there is something I have learned over the years than it is "never say never". With the year just six weeks on the run, I have to admit the hunt on Dutch New Wave vinyl has intensivite. At the moment the counter is already on more than 25 purchases (7" singles included). In January and February I bought a large portion on Discogs (Blue Murder, Boom Boom Mancini, Castilian Drum, De Steile Wand, Dreams Die First?, Hedda Gabler, I Spy, Piu Piu, Ricochet, Sens Unique, Shift, Slauerhoff, Spotlight Kids, The Clear, Top Dogs?, Trespasser W and Zsa Zsa). Another part of these purchases I obtained during a nice weekend in Amersfoort, where my wife and I stumbled by chance on a free vinyl fair (One Two, Tent, Ad Visser).  We were attracted to the fair by a sixties compilation played just in front of the doorstep. Afterwards I was able to score the Crystal Fire album of I Spy at the local record store Velvet Sound. Besides that I found some nice other stuff as well (

The first album I bought from them was "Grace Under Pressure", an album that leaned heavily on the new synthesizer sound of the band and can be described as one of the darkest if not the darkest album in the history of the band. The numbers are heavily influenced by the increasing tension of the Cold War and the thread throughout the songs is "pressure" and how people act under the influence of it. The band, founded in 1982 by Ralf Dörper, Andres Thein and Suzanne Freitag, with, for that time, progressive hard electronic beats. These are provided with dark texts, reminiscent of the work of Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare. By attracting the classically trained Michael Mertens and singer Claudia Brücken, the line-up is complete and after signing a contract with Trevor Horn's ZTT label, they debut in 1984 with the single "Dr. Mabuse". Black will be the solo project of Vearncombe, while fellow member Dave Dix will act as his producer from that moment on. The first single for WEA is called "" Hey Presto", which, partly due to the frequent running on MTV, is well known outside the United Kingdom. During the decade the duo scored three platinum albums, after which their roads separated in 1991. Smith is trying a solo career in the US, while Orzabal releases two more albums under the flag of Tears For Fears, before the curtain seems to fall. However, in 2000 the duo comes together again, releases an album in 2004 and tours again, resulting in a live CD / DVD in 2006.  Again a period of silence follows that recently was broken with a new collector and actually a new single, "I Love You But I'm Lost". A year later I finally went for the ax with the registration of Pinkpop and Werchter and since then I have followed the band closely. Their top album from the eighties is for me "New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)". And to keep the atmosphere of those years I choose "Someone Somewhere In Summertime" and then explicitly for the version of Newcastle 1982, which can be found on the double DVD "Seen The Lights (a visual history)", which I once and only bought the Late Night In Concert registration, where

I am a member of the Dutch Facebook Site "De Plantenkast 2.0"and since the start of this year each week I present a self chosen top album of the eighties. This site is in Dutch, but to bring in a regular base to this blog again, will offer the chosen album of the week to this blog as well. each entry is accompanied by a Youtube video of one of the songs from the album. So this mean to bring you the first six entries in a rush. Some of the early entries contained text accompanied with a mood of the day, but with from the fourth entry I started to bring some background information. A last thing to mention is that these entries are offered to you in no particular order. It is just what brings me to an album during the week.
